Run for Ryan House at DC Ranch launches from Market Street March 5

Feb. 17, 2011 – Headliners include “Biggest Loser” Season 9 contestant; free 1-mile run gets families in on fitness

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – For the seventh year, the Run for Ryan House at DC Ranch will launch from Market Street in north Scottsdale on Saturday, March 5. The running event in Scottsdale includes a half marathon, a 10K, 5K and a free one-mile family fun run. The Run will benefit Ryan House, the unique palliative and respite care provider that opened in downtown Phoenix about a year ago to serve children with life-threatening conditions and their families. About 1,400 runners are expected to participate in the Run for Ryan House.

Three local celebrity athletes will headline the Run for Ryan House in an effort to generate buzz for the event in north Scottsdale. Arizona triathlete Kevin Taddonio, an IronMan competitor, will run the 10K. Triathlete Lewis Elliot will run the 5K. And SunShine Hampton, a contestant on NBC’s “Biggest Loser” season 9, will run the half marathon.

The majority of the race has a lane closed to accommodate runners, in the places where there is not a lane closure, there will be either an extended bike lane or a paved pathway.

“The courses are accurately measured,” said Chris Giles, owner of RacePlace, which is producing the Run for Ryan House at DC Ranch races. “Hills along the second half of the 10K and Half will keep it interesting. And, being in and around DC Ranch, the courses offer scenic vistas.”

“As a Council, we nurture our community value of healthy living, foster civic engagement, and, through our philanthropic spirit, support the greater community of which DC Ranch is a part,” said Jennifer Clark, DC Ranch event director. “Our partnership with Ryan House brings to life the intention of our mission, and we are pleased to work hand in hand with Ryan House to help them help Arizona families.”

For their part Ryan House is grateful for DC Ranch’s partnership, and sees the connection as one that helps raise visibility of both.

“We are honored to be in this partnership with DC Ranch and to be the beneficiary of the Run for Ryan House for the seventh year,” said Debbie Simons, executive director of Ryan House. “It’s the support and the awareness from communities such as DC Ranch that helps us provide that essential care for children who have life-threatening conditions, and affords their families a much needed break from the round-the-clock care their child needs.”
